The Texas Southmost District will conduct elections May 8th for Places 3, 4 and 5 on the board of trustees. To get a complete list of the candidates running and where they stand on the issues, pick up your copy of The Collegian.

An earthquake with the magnitude of 4.0 hit the south Texas town of Rancho Banquete, Sunday.  The small city with a population of 479 people is 28 miles west of Corpus Christi.

Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison and reality television star, is in the hospital for a brain hemorrhage.  Bret Michael’s myspace blog states, “As of now Bret remains in ICU under 24-hour surveillance.  Further testing this week will help locate the source of the bleeding.”

The SGA election has concluded and the students have spoken. Jorge Munoz will take on the responsibility as the new SGA president over Ruby De La Fuente.Munoz won with a close 31-vote margin over De La Fuente 369 to 338.  Rosalinda Rangel will resume her seat as Vice President of Policy and Procedure with a total vote count of 454 to Joe Lee Rubio’s 232.  Joshua Law will take over Stephanie Villarreal’s seat as Vice President of Historical Archives in another close race of 357 to 309.  Nine other students who ran for senate went unopposed.  The winners will be sworn in at a student’s leadership banquet  Saturday, May 1st.

 

UTB/TSC and the Scorpion Theatrical Society will present a difficult dialogues presentation of The Abortion Monologues by Jane Cawthorne at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Student Union Gran Salon. The 18 monologues will detail women’s stories about abortion and will present both sides of the abortion argument.  For more information, contact Dr. Cook at 882-8851.

Earth Day is here.The 40-year-old celebration of ecological awareness will be celebrated on the UTB/TSC campus today presented by The Gorgas Science Society, Dean of Students Office, Student Union and Sting Radio Club.  The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. at the Student Union Veranda and La Sala.  There will be free recycling bags, t-shirts, pizza and much more while supplies last.

 

The Brownsville Literacy Center’s 12th annual Symphony in the Park and All That Jazz runs from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Saturday on the Student Union lawn. The event will honor Barry Horn, a former literacy center board member and one of the event’s founders. Performing will be the UTB/TSC Rio Bravo Wind Symphony and the One O’Clock Jazz Band. Tickets are $5, $7 and $10, but senior citizens get a $2 discount and UTB/TSC students will be admitted for half price. Admission is free for children under age 3. A Los Angeles Federal Judge has dismissed an 8-year-long lawsuit between the city of Los Angeles and the family of deceased rapper Biggie Smalls. The family insisted Smalls’ death was part of a plot by the Los Angeles police department. Biggie Smalls was gunned down in front of a L.A. club in 1997.A new police investigation on his death is under way.

The grand opening for the Center for Early Childhood Studies will be at 4 p.m. Thursday along University Boulevard. Speakers include President Dr. Juliet V. Garcia and Marisela Nava, manager. Following the ceremony, visitors can tour the facility and paint a tile for a future commemorative display. For more information, call 882-5730.

The UTB/TSC Alumni Association, Campus Activities Board, Catholic Campus Ministries, Circle K International and the Communication Council are selling tickets for $5 each to raise money for student scholarships. Prizes include gift certificates to local stores and restaurants and technological gadgets. Tickets can be bought at the Regiment House or from a student in the participating organizations.

 

The Village Voice states that West Side Latino Records is archiving, cataloging, and remastering 1,600-plus master tapes, ranging from classic salsa, boogaloo, and hard Latin funk.  Artists like Ray Barretto , La Lupe, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri stand a chance at being rereleased digitally.For the full story, check out the villagevoice.com

The Scorpion Mixed Martial Arts club will host the third annual College Grappling Tournament at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the UTB/TSC Garza Gym. The grand opening of the Brownsville Sports Park Beach Sports Cove is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and Volleyball Hall of Fame honoree Karch Kiraly will sign autographs and conduct a mini-clinic on sand volleyball skills. According to musically.com, An Apple Patent for a new app called Concert Ticket has been announced. This function would enable music fans to purchase concert e-tickets from their i-phones. Other features include “maps to the event, song lyrics, the ability to buy a live recording of the gig, virtual coupons for free drinks, and social features to find other fans at the concert.”
